![]() ![]() The current paper reports some results of a pilot research on the status and use of Nigerian Pidgin English in the Nigerian mega-city of Lagos. To conclude, in the next few years, Nigerians are expected to use Nigerian Pidgin English in all situations when they communicate. ![]() It was found that the attitude of Nigerian students regarding the Nigerian Pidgin English in UPM is positive. The results were calculated in percentages. Questionnaires were administered on selected students in the university in an attempt to elicit the attitude and usage of the informants to Nigerian Pidgin English. This study seeks to assess the use, and also determine the recognition of Pidgin English among Nigerian postgraduate students in Universiti Putra Malaysia. Nigerian Pidgin English evolved as a result of language contact with the British colonialists. It is quite interesting to note that Pidgin which essentially began as a demanded language between the white importers, who later turned colonial masters, and their black traders has now become a campus language-spoken of the majority of the population among the Nigerian students in advanced institutions of learning. In addition, the use of Nigerian Pidgin by students during official communication should be discouraged by implementing laws that can combat wrong use of English Language in the school environment. It was recommended that Staff and students in tertiary institution across the federation should engage the use of Standard English language in the communication rather than use of Nigeria Pidgin. From the analyzed data, it showed that students frequently use Pidgin in their daily communication within the school premises, lack of effective usage of English language has prompted student to use Pidgin in their communication and the use of Nigeria pidgin by male and female students has encourage wrong use and expression of English language. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study, from which the questionnaire was designed. The numbers of students used are one hundred and twenty-five (125) from National Open University Benin Study Centre. The design used for the study is a descriptive survey method. The main objective of this research work was to find out the impact of Nigerian Pidgin English on students communication and academic performance. ![]() The subject matter of this research work is to examine the effect of Nigerian Pidgin English on the academic performance among National Open University of Nigeria Students in Benin Study Centre. The second section deals with a discussion on the prominent sociolinguistic variables found in the various papers. The first section contains the reviews/synopses of the various papers or works that have been used for the study. The paper has been structured into two main parts. This paper, therefore, investigates the sociolinguistics of the multiplicity of West African Pidgins of Cameroon, Nigeria and Ghana against some sociolinguistic variables of gender, attitudes, code switching, borrowing, slang, and domains of language use. However, nowadays, it has gained status in some communities to the extent that it has become the mother-tongue of such communities. Historically, Pidgin began as a language marked by traditional interference used chiefly by the prosperous and privileged sections of a community, represented by the unskilled and illiterate class of the society (Quirk et al., 1985). One notable phenomenon in the field of language contact is Pidgin English. Language contact is a key issue in the field of sociolinguistics. ![]()
